Frequently Asked Questions
HypnoBirthing is a childbirth method that focuses on preparing parents for better birth. You will learn proven techniques in a well-thought-out program including deep relaxation, visualization, and self-hypnosis. All of these are designed to help you achieve a more comfortable birth.
It is possible to claim on ‘flexible benefits’ on your insurance. Not everyone has this coverage but some don’t know until they ask their insurance provider. Also some people have a health allowance of HK$800 – 16K per year for health services, for example, gyms, chiropractors, acupuncture and childbirth preparation classes can be included in this category. Ask your health insurance provider for more details on this option for coverage.
Compared to other childbirth methods, HypnoBirthing is based on the premise that childbirth does not necessarily need to be so painful if the mother is properly prepared and relaxed. HypnoBirthing is about managing pain. When women understand that pain is caused by constrictor hormones, created by fear, they learn, instead, to release fear thus creating endorphins – the feel-good hormones, as well as an abundance of oxytocin and adreline. They are then able to change their expectations of long, painful labour and are able to replace them with expectations of a more comfortable birthing method and take control using the power of her mind. Also, the breathing techniques are unique to other classes, as well as the distraction techniques of typical prenatal classes.
The Birth Companion of the mother’s choice is an integral part of the HypnoBirthing experience. He/she practices with the mother in helping her to prepare for deep relaxation. During labour the Birth Companion guides the labouring mother with relaxation techniques, deepening methods and provides comfort measures, as well as joining in with welcoming the new baby.
During self-hypnosis you are fully aware of your surrondings. The HypnoBirthing mother is better relaxed, but she is also an active participant in the labour process. Even though she is more relaxed, she is totally aware and may return to a conversant state or choose to become mobile whenever she desires.
Absolutely. The things you will learn in your HypnoBirthing classes is relaxation skills. These will be useful to both you and your baby, regardless of your birth experience. In the event that medical intervention of any sort is needed, you will find yourself better able to remain calm and in control. Mothers’ who have needed scheduled cesareans for medical reasons report that they were totally relaxed before, during and after the procedure. Many report that they needed little or no medication following the birth, and they were able to return to normal functioning in a very short period of time.
HypnoBirthing does not promise painless birthing, though many HypnoBirthing mothers do report a birth which they were able to be in the mindset to manage the pain better. When the cause of pain, which is fear that constricts the birthing muscles is eliminated, birthing can be accomplished in a shorter period and much more comfortably. A relaxed mother’s body will produce more endorphins, nature’s own relaxants as well as oxytocin and adreline. HypnoBirthing mothers’ may still experience contractions of tightening or pressure; but most describe their birth experience as working with their body through the contractions, and thus avoiding the excruciating pain that is frequently spoken of by women who choose other methods of preparation for birthing.
More and more care providers are familiar with HypnoBirthing couples and procedures. If your care giver is not knowledgeable about HypnoBirthing, take the opportunity early in your pregnancy to discuss the techniques you will be using and the type of birthing environment that you desire. In class, you will learn how to create a Birth Plan, which will help you to communicate your birthing preferences to your doctor or midwife. Also, your HypnoBirthing instructor can contact your provider and pass on information on HypnoBirthing.
